Why Tread Depth Matters on Newport Roads
Driving on Newport's roads with worn tyres puts you and other road users at serious risk. In the UK the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, but safety experts recommend replacing tyres at 3mm because wet-weather grip falls sharply below that point. With Newport's frequent rainfall, keeping an eye on tread is especially important.
The 20p Coin Test
The quickest check needs nothing more than a 20p coin. Press it into the main tread groove — if the outer rim of the coin disappears into the groove, you're above the legal limit. If the rim stays visible, your tyres are dangerously low and need replacing straight away. Do this on several points around each tyre, including the edges, as wear is often uneven.
Using a Tread Depth Gauge
For a precise reading, a tread depth gauge gives you a millimetre figure and costs only a few pounds from any motor factor. Measure at three positions across the width of each tyre and at least four points around the circumference. This picks up diagonal or one-sided wear patterns that the coin test can miss.
