How to Extend the Life of Your Tyres and Save Money

A set of quality tyres is a significant investment. These practical steps help Newport drivers get the maximum mileage from every set.

Keep Pressures Correct at All Times

Incorrect tyre pressure is the single biggest cause of premature tyre wear. Under-inflation causes the outer edges to wear faster and generates excess heat inside the tyre. Over-inflation causes the centre of the tread to wear first. Check your pressures every month and before any long journey using the figures from your vehicle's door sticker — not the number on the tyre sidewall.

Get Your Wheels Aligned Regularly

Wheel alignment — also called tracking — refers to the angles at which your tyres contact the road. Even a small misalignment accelerates tyre wear significantly and causes the car to drift or pull to one side. Newport roads, with their share of potholes and speed bumps, can knock alignment out gradually. Have it checked annually or whenever a tyre shows uneven wear.

Rotate Your Tyres

Front tyres on front-wheel-drive vehicles wear faster because they handle both steering and driving forces. Rotating tyres front to rear every 6,000–8,000 miles evens out the wear across all four and can add thousands of miles to the life of the set.

Avoid Aggressive Driving Habits

Hard acceleration, late braking and fast cornering all accelerate tyre wear. Smooth, progressive driving not only extends tyre life but also improves fuel economy. On Newport's urban roads where 20mph and 30mph zones are common, there is little speed advantage to driving aggressively anyway.

Have Tyres Balanced When Fitting

Always have new tyres balanced at fitting. An unbalanced wheel causes vibration that stresses the tyre and other suspension components. Newport Mobile Tyres balances every tyre we fit using portable dynamic balancing equipment.
