What Is Wheel Balancing?
Every wheel and tyre assembly has small variations in weight distribution around its circumference. When the assembly rotates at speed, heavy spots create centrifugal force that causes vibration. Wheel balancing involves spinning the wheel on a machine, identifying the heavy spots, and adding small counterweights to the rim to create an even distribution.
Signs Your Wheels Need Balancing
The most common symptom of an unbalanced wheel is a steering wheel vibration that appears at a specific speed — typically between 50mph and 70mph — and may worsen or improve as speed changes. You might also notice vibration through the floor or seat rather than the steering wheel, which often points to an unbalanced rear wheel. Uneven tyre wear — particularly scalloping or cupping of the tread — is another sign.
When Should You Have Wheels Balanced?
Wheels should always be balanced when a new tyre is fitted, after a tyre is repaired, and whenever vibration symptoms appear. It is also good practice to have balancing checked after any significant impact, such as hitting a deep pothole on a Newport road. As part of our standard tyre fitting service, Newport Mobile Tyres balances every wheel as standard.
